Iris Stella

Blue Intention

7 - 25 September 2022

G1

Opening Night

Friday 9 September | 6pm – 8pm

◼︎

Stella explores the beautiful fragility of our oceans and the world we live in. She presents the deep Blue in all its beauty and power, but also with its fragility and vulnerability, reminding us to treat our world with love and kindness.

Blue intention is presented to us with two main messages, on the one hand it is an environmental call for awareness, and on the other hand it is a metaphor of life. Stella presents us with the deep blue sea with human-like traits, emotions, strengths and weaknesses.

Her body of work showcases the oceans in all its different forms and textures. Each work reflects the artist’s mood when she paints and, just like the sea, is a mirror image of Stella’s emotions. Taking the artistic process back to basics, Stella celebrates her connection with the environment and Moana.

Artist Bio

Iris Stella is a New Zealand-based, French abstract artist who combines acrylics and organic materials to form relief paintings. Bare environments such as island atolls or sandy beaches and dunes have amalgamated in the artist’s memory, forming points of reference through which she invokes universal moods with depth and tone.

Stella’s canvases are at once naturalistic and abstract; from a distance her aerial views are reminiscent of sights seen from a plane window, while on closer inspection their raised surfaces are lyrical studies of texture. Some works appear almost photo-realistic from a distance—a deep blue piece resembles a coastal tide viewed at night, yet at the same time could represent quivering light rays seen from the depths of the ocean. Stella invites viewers to project their own associations onto each painting, which has seen her explore increasingly abstracted forms in earthy and oceanic tones.

Iris Stella has a Masters in Textile and Fashion Business from MOD’SPE Paris, and her paintings have featured in a number of editions of The World of Interiors magazine. Her work was represented at The Wharf Gallery in Raglan New Zealand, Depot Artspace in Auckland New Zealand and Saatchi Art.

Stella has worked on a number of commissions for clients across Europe, Australasia and the United Arab Emirates.
