Daniel Longo
Opening Night
Friday 20 January | 6pm – 8pm
◼︎
Expressive black-and-white photographs of distorted bodies represent the grotesque, revelations of shame and the compelling nature of the abject.
Through fragmented forms of expression and representation, grotesque bodies are used as symbols of shame in CROOKED. A theatrical and chiaroscuro environment is set for each body photographed in order to explore themes such as shame, grotesquery and abjection. In visual and symbolic representations of shame, fragmented forms of the body facilitate gestures of concealment and revelation of shame.
Artist Bio
Daniel Longo was born in 1990 in Geelong/Djilang, Wathaurong Country. Longo is fascinated by images that cause people to react to fragmented, distorted, or altered bodies. A critical component of his research and practice is the representation of the grotesque, uncanny, and abject. Consequently, he is drawn to photography and digital sculpture, where he can manipulate the real into the unreal. A practice-led approach facilitates decision-making on the abject by combining a photographic medium with digital sculpture, ultimately determining material outcomes.
