Artist Statement
Brace developed from my interest in symbols that direct us to pause, providing a space for interpretation and nuance. It is part of a series of works that I created in 2024 where I borrowed from and abstracted commonly used symbols: punctuation, corrections and editing shorthand, musical symbols and wayfinding signage. I played with motifs from an array of symbols, using directional lines, shapes, colours and spacing to create new works that echo the ways symbols break up our visual space and direct our eyes and actions.
Artist Bio
Kate Hendry has been making artwork that sits at the intersection between drawing and sculpture for the past 25 years. She has exhibited regularly over this period and her work is held in private and public collections in Australia and overseas. Process is critical to her practice - all works are created by hand, with each individual join made through twisting and crimping the wire with pliers. When hung or suspended, the wire artworks cast shadow lines along the walls where they are installed, evolving in complexity and density as the light changes throughout the day. Hendry often works in series creating abstract relief artworks and drawings informed by motifs from architecture, the landscape and music.
