Artist Statement

JC’s work explores the ongoing internal dialogue he experiences in defining his cultural and social identity. Australian born with mixed Asian and Caucasian ancestry, his blended heritage coupled with his queerness, creates an internal tension. This tension fuels a perpetual cycle of questioning and redefining his identity, which often leads to a heightened sense of otherness and ambiguity.

Heavily influenced by Abstract Expressionism, Maximalism, and his cultural heritage, JC’s introspective process is translated through his art using personal and cultural symbolism, dynamic mark-making, and a bold use of colour.

Artist Bio

JC is a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. Inspired by his great uncle Anton David Riebe, a landscape painter, JC followed his footsteps into art by beginning his vocational training at the Southbank Institute of Technology in Brisbane, before going on to complete his Bachelor of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne.
