Artist Statement and Bio
Much of my personal work comes from an interest in the tracing of light and movement. The work exhibited is one of a number of experiments in static, photographic tracings of human movement as opposed to recording or creating movement through cinematographic, videographic or motion graphic techniques. I have a Masters of Arts and work in more traditional film and television production while also pursuing my own individual art practice which originates in painting and drawing. My professional work includes lecturing and production supervision in film, media arts, screen and media production at The University of Melbourne, Victorian College of the Arts and RMIT University over four decades.
Details about artwork
While it is a landscape of sorts, the subject is more a capture of my own physical movement through time than representation of night lights and building construction. The light trails were achieved through time exposure using a long focal length lens as a means of amplifying even the minutest camera movement. The resulting transformation of a recognisable nightscape into an abstraction refocuses our attention on physical movement of the photographer.
The image is a record of both deliberate camera movement to create composition as well as an incidental recording of ‘micro movements’ of breath and heartbeat.
