Grace Mitchell | Fog Paintings

Artist Statement

The liminal space between intelligibility and unintelligibility, or more simply, fog, underpins many aspects of my practice. The way fog obscures objects while also revealing the palpability of space has inspired this exploration and has propelled ideas of liminality in my work. I often find myself following a blankness or a certain reduction that leaves just enough information to know something is there but not quite to understand what is there, like looking into a thick fog and trying to discern what is inside it. 

Artist Bio

Grace Mitchell is an artist from Naarm/Melbourne, who works in an expanded painting practice. Her works focus on a mixture of mediums, specialising in oil painting on found materials. Her current work exists as a translation of an internal landscape, a dense, foggy space where the intelligibility of forms is reduced and obscured. Currently working from an archive of her mother’s film photographs from across Europe shot in 1996, her practice enmeshes physical landscapes with the palette of her internal world.
