Ying Huang has always been fascinated by nature.

She has spent a lifetime rescuing animals. The dogs, plants, insects and even the birds that hatched in her backyard and then flew away  - have all become her subjects.

In 2020 she rescued an ex-racing greyhound who she named “Kiddy” (after a cat she once owned).

The physical and emotional rehabilitation of Kiddy has had a profound impact on both of them. Since being rescued, Kiddy has been the focus of many of Ying’s paintings.

Ying’s illustration style tells the story of how, over time, Kiddy transformed from a flea-bitten mistreated dog into a sweet, loving, plant-chewing, toy destroying and sleeping 20-hours a day creature - a creature who also loves finding and chasing birds in her backyard.

Ying’s humour reflects a rich narrative that invites her viewer to explore and contemplate tales of their imagination and journey or even rehabilitation.

The figures in her other paintings are depicted sitting with their pet friends. Their expressions illustrate how joyful, enriching and important it is to keep close friends near.

In contrast to her paintings, her prints are more powerful than playful, and they move the viewer by provoking a range of deep and complex emotional responses.

Artist Bio

Ying Huang is a Manchurian-born Chinese Australian painter and printmaker.

Before Huang settled in Melbourne in 2005, she lived and travelled in many counties throughout Asia, Europe and the Middle East, working as a scuba diving instructor and teacher.

She completed her Bachelor of Fine Art and Honours at RMIT, majoring in Printmaking in 2014. She has won prestige art awards and has been short-listed for many art prizes. She was also a commissioned artist for the City of Yarra.

During her studies at RMIT, Huang explored and experimented with works on different mediums, such as brushed aluminium, which allows its colour and texture to illuminate the image. The work ‘Heart’s Shadow’ is the finest example.

At RMIT, Huang also conceptualized an art movement that she termed ‘Polipanda’, a hybrid art practice combining political propaganda art and pop art. Huang’s recent Polipanda painting satirises the current political figures, and the work is playful and humorous.

Huang’s other recent paintings explore different motifs.

Her work illustrates stories.

They are enriching and joyful.
