Satanic Panic, which gets its name from the moral panic of the 1980s, is a collection of retro-styled, surreal and absurdist comic strips derived and extrapolated from Mccarthy’s off-beat sense of humour, inane conversations and observations he has encountered in his day-to-day life.
Artist Bio
Tom McCarthy is a Melbourne-based artist whose work explores the surreal and absurd through drawing, cartoons and animation. Having completed his Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) at ANU in 2017, McCarthy predominately practised and exhibited in Canberra, where he originates, until 2021, when he relocated to Melbourne to further pursue a career in 2D Animation.
Mccarthy’s work primarily focuses on tongue-in-cheek narratives laden with humourous irony and sarcasm.
McCarthy often utilises traditional and easily accessible materials such as paper graphite and ink though computer software is used sparingly to colour his work.
McCarthy’s interests in cartoons(comics and Animation), science fiction/horror films and books, music and mid-century modernist design trends are all essential elements of his work and are incorporated into his practice in one way or another.
