Susannah Foster

What Was Detroit Like?

4 November – 21 November 2015

In her current exhibition Susannah Foster draws on anecdotal statements both overheard and addressed to the artist to harness the idea of the unreliable narrator in creating a sense of place. Concepts of race, class, culture and identity are considered through traveling to several American cities; Portland, Boston and Detroit. Verbal descriptions or comments inherently contain anxieties and prejudices; these works are interested in the tension in seeking unbiased explanations.

Foster is a contemporary visual artist working in Melbourne, Australia. She majored in Sculpture, Sound and Spatial Practice, graduating from RMIT University in 2014 with first class honours. She has exhibited in both group and solo shows across Melbourne and recently completed a residency in the US. This is her first show with red gallery.
