Shelley O’Keefe looks at the voice of protest uniting 21st Century women in her current exhibition Women Protest. She sees the issues facing women today as global and cross-cultural, arising from trends towards authoritarianism, fanaticism and unfettered social media platforms peddling hate and fear.
Shelley works in a variety of mediums including graphite and charcoal drawing, mixed media, oil on canvas and digital drawing.
Artist Bio
Shelley taught Art in a number of metropolitan High Schools while living in Sydney. She exhibited at the Harrington Street Gallery 1976-1982.
Since moving to Bellingen, NSW, Shelley has been active in Mid North Coast regional arts. She initiated and facilitated Arts network Bellingen, which received funding for 2 major community art events, Open Up To Art (OUTA) in 2017 and 2019 in which 30 artists from different disciplines participated. Shelley is a Board member for Arts Mid North Coast, which looks at strategically developing the arts in rural mid north coast areas.
Shelley is a founding member of ‘Sunday Bites’, a group who organises monthly talks and discussions on art and culture and has presented at these events. In 2018 and 2019 she spent a total of 6 months in Berlin as part of the TAKT Berlin Residency program and participated in two group exhibitions at the Tapir gallery, Berlin.
