Opening Night

Friday 25 August | 6 - 8pm

Ruth Groves' text work presents a list of words that creates their own chaos .The visual play of surface, layering and textual conundrum presents a dialogue with our fractured world.

Ruth describes her digital work being a new script or sub text that reveals a different but similar undercurrent to her text work. A parallel system that reflects her contemporary world.

These works take in emotional states, histories, stories, drawing, all aligned with the artificial landscape.

A dialogue exists which is akin to a constructed landscape.

Ruth's " joie de vivre" is clear in her use of colour, text and inventiveness. In her words "it happens in the doing".

What I like about these works is their open endedness.

Artist Bio

Ruth grew up in Melbourne. She completed her first year of Art School at the South Australian School of Art before travelling to Florence, Italy, where she studied Printmaking.

After completing the Printmaking course, she headed by invitation to the USA for around 12 months. Ruth had a major conceptual work, "Gridded Room", in San Francisco for 12 months.

After she returned to Australia, Ruth completed her Bachelor's Degree at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne.

Ruth was awarded the Carlton & United Breweries Scholarship via the VCA, the National Gallery Society Scholarship via the VCA and the Arches Reeves Prize for Works on Paper via the VCA.

Ruth has previously received an Arts Council grant under the Artists in Schools Program.

Ruth also holds a Bachelor of Social Work and a Master in Social Sciences from Uni SA. She worked in remote and isolated First Nations Countries in the Northern Territory for many years.

Ruth has previously been included in group exhibitions at the National Gallery of Victoria, the Victorian College of the Arts, RMIT Gallery, the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, Gippsland Institute, Powell Street Gallery, Port Melbourne Gallery, Red Gallery and Counihan Gallery.

She worked with well-known Printmaker Bea Maddock on Maddock's commission for the High Court in Canberra for five and a half months.

After being frustrated with the lack of opportunities for woman artists and a largely patriarchal gallery system, Ruth stopped producing artwork for over 30 years. This is the first solo exhibition of her latest work, hence the exhibition's title, Hiatus.

Ruth has artworks in the National Gallery of Victoria, the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, the Victorian College of the Arts, the Victorian Education Department, and other private collections.
