Lily Platts & Emma Neumann
Opening Night
Friday 25 Aug | 6 - 8pm
◼︎
While completing their 2019 fine art honours year in Melbourne, Lily Platts and Emma Neumann met and quickly bonded over their love for painting. Through this friendship, they created a support system to help each other navigate the process of refining their painting practices. They share a love for creating an imagined world that they bring to life through colour, shape, and form.
Lily Platts (she/her) is a visual artist living and working on Ngunnawal land. Lily explores themes of the everyday and is drawn to the way people are reflected within the objects she paints. She is drawn to the medium of still life to capture the past lives of forgotten objects, reimagining their histories through painting. Emma Neumann (she/her) is a painter working in Melbourne. Her work explores imagined landscapes and the way that colour can transform surfaces. Emma pushes the line between figuration and abstraction, resulting in emotional and dreamlike worlds.
In 2020 Lily moved back home to the ACT but continued to support each other and collaborate from a distance. Since leaving art school, they have worked in solitude in home studios, a stark contrast to the shared studio environment where these artists met. Despite the lack of community, they had become accustomed to, the process of critique and support shifted to digital communication of shared videos and photos.
Emma Neumann is a visual artist based in Naarm . Her work delves into the intricacies of colours, exploring abstracted realities that blend the familiar with distortion. Through the harmonious interplay of hues, she creates captivating visual experiences that explore the boundaries of reality and fiction. Neumann’s paintings invite viewers to embrace their imagination and find beauty in the unfamiliar, as colours weave stories beyond the recognizable.
‘From a Distance’ showcases the pair's mutual love of painting in vibrant colours through their own unique processes. The exercise of providing a critique of each other works quickly shifts to becoming a form of inspiration for both artists, creating a body of work in response to each other’s work. By using collaboration as a tool for exploration, Lily and Emma were able to push the boundaries of their work.
