Paul Robinson
Opening Night
Friday 25 October | 6 - 8pm
◼︎
In this exhibition, Paul Robinson has translated some of his earlier paintings into mosaic. In last year’s show he referenced various other artists. This year, he has referenced his own work, some of which is hung too, in order to give some context.
Paul has also included some of his “machine head” series, where power tools are given life. These are self portraits of a kind, where the tool user, after such a lot of contact, becomes one with the tools.
The other pieces are based on inevitably recurring themes. Paul has followed his fancy, which has lead him to continue to explore themes that have always been of interest.
Artist Bio
Paul Robinson has been making art work for sixty years.
He completed an Arts Degree at Monash Uni, graduating in 1970. Paul worked as an English teacher until the early 80’s, when he resigned and went to Phillip Institute. Bundoora (now RMIT) to study Fine Art, majoring in painting.
Paul’s first show in Melbourne was at Pinacotheca Gallery in 1988. In subsequent years, he exhibited at the Caulfields Arts Complex, 69 Smiths Street and the Moonee Ponds Incinerator. Paul showed mosaics last year at Red Gallery.
In the mid 90’s, Paul supervised (along with Helen Bodycomb) three six month public art projects, two of which involved pavement mosaics in Moonee Valley, which can still be seen in Kensington and Queens Park, Moonee Ponds.
Paul has continued to make mosaics, including projects with primary schools in Wallan, where Paul lives, and in Beveridge. He also continues to paint, with his art practice being his primary occupation.
