Water dominates this series of works. Through all seasons Marie-Louise has observed the water and how it finds its way to meet the Yarra river at Dights Falls. The surrounding bushland has been a constant resource for her work. She explains that the memory of the direct experience of nature has become part of her which in turn informs her work. She does not copy nature but trusts in the process of painting and approaches each canvas with an open mind.

Marie-Louise Anderson moved into Rushall Park, Fitzroy North in 2018. She found herself close to the Merri Creek which became the preferred direction for long and short walks, especially during Melbourne’s lockdowns. Every track offered continuous opportunities to ‘peep at nature’ through the many layers of bushland. Part of the allure for Marie-Louise is in the desire to express the ‘other worldliness’ that surrounds us when we look hard enough. The paintings, along with the digital works, are evolving to become more abstract while they address the meaning of place.

Artist Bio

Marie-Louise Anderson was born in Tasmania and moved to Melbourne in the 1960s to study ballet and later Graphic Design. She then moved to Yackandandah where she lived with her husband for 20 years. They built a mud brick house and raised two children while she worked as a studio potter and taught at Riverina Institute of TAFE. She returned to Tasmania to study for a Bachelor of Fine Arts (First Class Honours) in 1998 and a Master of Fine Arts by Research, 1999-2001 at the University of Tasmania. In 2010 she was awarded a PhD in Fine Art from Monash University, Melbourne. Printmaking, digital photography and installation played a significant role in her work during this time. Research, conference participation and teaching has taken her interstate as well as to Norfolk Island, South Africa and South Korea.

Her research interests have covered areas of migration, and particularly how different locations mould the individual and conversely how societies and individuals impact the natural environment. The direct experience of nature interests her as well as the threat posed by global warming. As well as painting, oral history continues to inform much of her artwork such as in developing creative community projects and book design.

Marie-Louise has held 22 solo exhibitions and been represented in numerous group and prize exhibitions. Highlights include solo exhibitions at the University of Tasmania, Monash University, the Stephen McLaughlan Gallery, the Shrine of Remembrance, Langford Gallery and in Spain as part of Impact 10 printmaking conference.
