Cubes is a continuing exploration of geometric forms and how they can be used to create intricate structures. All works on paper are hand painted, gouache on Arches 640 gsm cold press paper.

Artist Statement

When the Post Impressionist artist, Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) painted a series of landscapes where he cross-hatched his brush strokes, giving an impression of stacked cubes. He had created a sense of space to his paintings, which we call ‘Cubism’. This lasted until Picasso (1881-1973) took it one step further with synthetic cubism, where the forms were geometrically simplified and flattened but used bold colours.

The world of art changed forever with Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) and Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935), the Ukrainian. They spurned the reality of the real world - what they saw. The art they created was called ‘Non Objective’ (No Object) or more commonly referred to as ‘Abstract Art’. This art relied upon the visual language.

The Visual language comprises the main elements of a painting: Line, Tone, Texture, Colour, Light, Composition, Form, Shape ( rectangles, squares, cubes, circles, spheres, triangles and pyramids), Movement, Space and Repetition etc.

If someone asked David Turner what he paints, the answer would be “I Paint Colour”. Colours that are high in chroma, that sizzle and sting the eye. This relies on the use of colour vibration, where two different colours but of the same tone sit next to each other, causing the eye to flutter. And colour saturation, where the brain starts looking for colours that are missing. If you sit in a room that is all red you will start to feel uncomfortable and sweat as the brain seeks the missing complementary colour, which is green. The colours used by Turner are placed in a geometric framework that relies upon simple shapes and lines to lead the eye in a further dance across the surface of the painting. The aim is to create movement, to be joyful and happy.

Our modern world is based on structure - structure of buildings, road grids, electrical wiring, navigation, the internet and so on. Without structure things would stop working. These paintings represent these structures but in a user- friendly way. They are not meant to be negative but to give a positive view of the world in which we live.
