Karen Sedaitis

Since childhood, the artist has been drawn to explore the underlying substance of things, looking for meaning beneath the surface gloss; finding worlds within worlds, and noticing the myriad ways the outer world masks and distorts the inner.
In this body of work, Karen uses curved glass in still-life arrangements as both influencer and influenced, creating dialogues between both.
The exploration provided unplanned outcomes of entangled elements from without the glass forming new perspectives within, often resulting in multiple paintings from one still-life studio set-up.
Artist Bio
Karen came to a painting career later in life, having been a horticulturist, landscape designer and writer of fiction while raising her children in a mud-brick house on the far south coast of NSW.
Years of joy immersed in nature ended in 2006 with the onset of an auto-immune system disorder which flared up in sunshine. Being ill and having to stay out of the sun led to radical changes and Karen moved to Bega in 2010, creating a small cut-flower garden for inspiration in her studio, initially exploring the still-life genre as a way of immersing herself in nature without the health issues.
Karen’s art practice became full-time in 2018, enhancing her connection with the bright, vibrant outside world. Karen is primarily a painter on board and canvas, as well as a block and monotype printer. Her subjects are usually nature-based, encompassing landscapes, still life and botanical studies though the still life form is a favourite, created from compositions of plants she has grown herself along with personal objects collected throughout her life. Karen’s art practice provides the imaginative material and scope for varied, self-led explorations in the fields of philosophy, psychology and the study of human nature and connectivity, all of which fascinate the artist.
