Jerome Rush
Opening Night
Friday 2 Feb | 6 - 8pm

Rush has created jarring observations which reflect upon the dichotomy between our Australian privileged white middle-class life and that of people in war zones like Gaza for example. He contrasts the typical beach holiday of caravan parks and beaches with the destruction caused by rockets and bombs and the effects on the inhabitants within them. Rush takes a step back from the world of Instagram, Tiktok and Facebook, and observes the tendency of individuals (himself included) to post moments of privilege in our own lives, only to contrast them with ones of pain and suffering happening a world away, but in very real now footage and time.
He is taking a reflective look at white guilt and how it manifests itself in today's society. How can we help? Is posting on the internet and making people aware of an issue enough? Does it free us to then lead our normal privileged lives? How can we do more? What is the line? Is it ok to relax and enjoy life while there are thousands around the world much worse off? Is dialogue enough?
Using bright lurid colours and a simple collage technique on paper, Rush juxtaposes images of joy and distraction with collaged black paper images of individuals in the middle of war, where there is no electricity, little water, no real amenities, only themselves and post-apocalyptic skies. Free Palestine. From the River to the Sea.
Rush will be donating all proceeds to his fund created for the children of Gaza. You can donate here: https://gazacrisis.unicef.org.au/jerome-rush-art-for-kids-of-gaza
