Jeremy Ham
Opening Night
Friday 20 Oct | 6 - 8pm
◼︎
Through a generative process of improvisation and by embracing the powers of computation and the abstraction of musical data, Jeremy J Ham has initiated a new form of ‘musico-spatial’ creative practice that operates at the intersection of the musical and spatial domains. ‘Liquid Polyrhythm’ explores the infinite complexities of polyrhythmic drumming improvisation through the translation of music into an array of stunning visual images that reflect the form and flow of drumming.
Within this emerging practice, the timing, dynamics and polyrhythmic complexities of improvised drumming emerge as spectacular visual images that are unique and distinctive and reflective of the 'infinite art' of improvisation. Musical improvisation becomes spatial improvisation; microtiming is transformed into space, dynamics of performance generate fluidity of form, 3D spatial forms are overlaid and superimposed, given materiality, translucency and light and emerge as ‘Liquid Polyrhythm’ prints on canvas.
The temporal and dynamic intricacies and complexities of polyrhythmic drumming are given new meaning and delight. The musico-spatial nexus- the connection between music and space- is teased and explored through a creative process that is founded on interdisciplinary connections between music and spatial design. The joys of music are manifested in visual delight.
Artist Bio
Dr. Jeremy J. Ham is a SurfCoast-based drummer, architect, former academic and artist. Jeremy explores his creativity across the musico-spatial continuum through works in sound (Digital Drumscapes), fixed media (Liquid Polyrhythm) and in Virtual Reality (Synaespatia). Jeremy’s artistic practice has emerged from his PhD in Architecture and Design at RMIT Spatial Information Architecture Lab Sound Studios which sought to explore connections between music and spatial design. Post-PhD, Jeremy has been invited to perform and exhibit at Hoop Gallery Torquay (2023), Ars Electronica Aotearoa (2022), Klang Symposium Hamburg (2021), eCAADe Portugal (2019), The New and Experimental Arts Lab Geelong (2019) and TENOR Conference Melbourne (2019). His design research on the intersection of music, architecture and computing has been published in conferences in Europe, Asia and Australia.
