Jenni Walker

Re-Threaded

25 November – 12 December 2015

In her latest exhibition, re-threaded, Jenni Walker presents a new series of oil paintings. The works encourage the viewer to reflect upon the use and value of the seemingly unimportant craft tools used to create the hand-made. These handmade creative activities enrich our lives and should be recognized and celebrated.

The subject matters in these paintings speak of personal and cultural history, both past and present. It is where the use and production of the handmade has a direct connection to establishing the identity of the ‘home’. Walker deliberately uses a domestic narrative to emphasize this and to create a relatable context that the viewer can engage with.

The artists’ own craft tools become the creative focus and hero of the paintings. They bring their own sense of history from decades of use and are physically constructed into tiny ‘still life’ sculptures, photographed and then transformed onto the linen canvas.

Walker completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) at the University of Melbourne, Victorian College of the Arts in 2010. Working in painting, embroidery and textiles her works have been purchased by the Melbourne University Student Union Art Collection, St Vincent’s Hospital and held in private collections. She has been part of many group exhibitions and has been a finalist in art awards in Victoria, NSW and Queensland.
