Akin - Allied by nature. Having or showing an affinity
Helen Kocis Edwards considers the Human – Nature Relationship through interactions between archetypes within the natural environment. Imagery reminiscent of illustrations in story books and fairy tales create an accessible window into these complex and symbiotic connections.
Combinations of drawing, painting and printmaking explore subject placement, scale and the gaze to investigate the effect land, sky and sentient creatures have upon each other and existing balances of power.
While people are navigating the opportunities and demands of daily living their animal counterparts are being affected by their behaviour. Since European settlement in Australia hundreds of species have become extinct and large swathes of habitat have been removed or damaged. Correspondingly, human existence, from a biopsychosocial perspective, is related to and dependent upon the state of an individual’s surroundings. A flourishing environment is likely to foster healthier inhabitants.
Akin uses real and imagined scenarios to investigate interconnections within real and imagined physical and emotional landscapes
