Dan Newton & Sam Marshall
Opening Night
Friday 17 December 6pm – 8pm
◼︎
In this continuing body of work A New Line of Thought Dan Newton explores themes around space and the natural landscape. His current work is intended as a picture map. Newton reimagines natural sites from a birds eye view. He explores how water, time and the volcanic landscape have shaped these places and has created his own visual language to explore these ideas that through time have spoken to him. Through his own use of shape, colour and line he has created his own language of geographical space. Newton chooses to work on new white paper as well as old carbon copied hand drafted plan drawings. That for him in themselves are affected by the elements and time. Gouache on paper has allowed him to focus on precision and playing with precision.
For Sam Marshall drawing on his genuine love for birds and a fascination with ornithology, he began to produce new works using these older techniques and styles. The execution felt bold and assertive. It was refreshing, a change of mind as much as style. Although quite different to his daily artwork at the time, it soon formed a new harmony between the two streams, building the new style into his artistic routine. The paintings here make up a body of work completed since the beginning of 2020 and comprise pieces consistent with this recent change of style and mind.
A new line of thought.
