This body of work differs from that of Cal's vibrant hard-edge and predominantly flat colour compositions, serving as an exploration of geometry in a space of volume and depth. Instead of focusing on boldly coloured two-dimensional minimalism, this collection is a study of solid geometries, abstract constructs, and architectural forms that evoke a sense of structural familiarity with our built environment. However, these structures are stripped of pragmatic function or purpose and exist as isolated entities, presented as though existing within a vacuum.

By removing any practical context of these constructs, the artist encourages the viewer to experience them solely as aesthetic objects, free from the association of utility or design intent. In this way, the compositions, whilst reminiscent, transcend traditional architectural representations, instead existing as contemplations of form, balance, and the ways in which light and shadow interact with the static surface. The shared colours and fundamental geometric components running through the body of work serve to create a harmony, tying the disparate forms to the same reality, while the absence of a conventional environment around them fosters a sense of detachment, as though these creations exist in an alternate plane of experience. One which is both familiar and foreign, like a dream state. This approach encourages viewers to appreciate the pureness of their structure and composition, where forms, their proportions and materiality take centre.

Artist Bio

Living in Melbourne, self-taught artist Cal works to explore geometric minimalism, in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional compositions.

Growing up they had an early interest in architecture and industrial design, but favoured the conceptual to the tangible and would often draw tessellations and isometric forms on a drafting board. Initially a fine art printmaker working with linoleum blocks, they eventually returned to geometric art. Their practice now ranges from fine art painting, to public space and built object, drawing inspiration from symmetry, repetition, technical drawing and the built environment.

Using architectural drafting techniques, aerosol paint, and tape, Cal produces highly accurate mathematically precise painted works. Frequently depicting abstracted architectural forms, or bold minimalist and often flat colour hard edge compositions, with the aim to induce a sense of calm and tranquillity in the viewer.
