Andy has a background in Illustration and Graphic Design, with a Visual Communication degree from the University Of South Australia. Photography has been a constant component throughout his creative journey, so it only seems natural that he would eventually combine 2 passions to create a body of work that is both unique and extremely personal.

After arriving prematurely back to Australia after 6 years in US, he wanted to pay tribute to a city that fulfilled him, inspired him and helped him through a challenging period of his life. There was a ‘lightbulb’, shot out of bed moment that led to him exploring this idea of overlaying type on to the dozens of images he’d taken of NYC. During this exploration he created a grid pattern that he then used to create the ‘NYC’ Lettermark. The structure and location of these graphics was a highly thought-out process to discover the best possible interaction between image and overlay. Almost every image has its very own lettermark combination.

The colour of the graphic was a no-brainer as it is easily identifiable as the famous NYC cab colour, but it is also used extensively throughout the city streets and subways. Thankfully the deep yellow worked beautifully with the colour profile created for the series.

After the preliminary concepts, everything came together seamlessly and ‘THE BONES OF A CITY’ was born. 18 final images were painstakingly selected from the initial 62 and all are exhibited here, for you.
