Ajith Perera is an emerging artist based in Canberra. He has a background in law and psychology. He is a practising lawyer and a provisionally registered psychologist. He is also a visual arts student at the Australian National University. As a visual arts student, he has explored various artistic practices which include ceramics and photography.

However, his preferred medium is drawing which he values for its immediacy and capacity to give form to his subconscious thoughts, feelings, and desires. Using processes such as automatic drawing and lucid dreaming he seeks to access his subconscious mind. Keeping a sketchbook by his bed, Ajith’s drawings are usually completed in one sitting and at times give voice to deep and difficult emotions. His work is intensely personal yet asks the viewer to also engage with their own subconscious mind and embrace all that is dark, erotic, deviant or taboo within it. In this regard, and contemplation of future work, the artist also seeks to correspond directly (or anonymously) with individuals who may wish to explore their subconscious mind with a view to the artist creating new work.

A viewer can communicate with the artist through a note at the exhibition, by email (aperera.art@gmail.com) or by Instagram (@aperera13) and the artist looks forward to what might emerge from this process: in viewing his work, responding to it in the moment and then contributing to the creation of new work the artist asks more of the viewer than a passive engagement with his work.
