Artist Statement
This series of paintings has a focus on both the study and application of colour theory principles within an asymmetrical design framework. The paintings utilize a black ground to maximise the force of colour intensity by perceptually making the colour appear lighter and brighter on an increased surface area. A range of geometric design treatments and formats clash, hit and collide with each other to produce an often frenetic and energetic composition. The subtext alludes to the diversity of media and communication modes that envelop our daily lives and our constant endeavours to process and understand rapid technological developments. This information environment is all embracing and can be discordant, fragmented, challenging and often contradictory. The Balance Series takes elements from his geometric vocabulary and organises them into combinations and columns that are delicately and often precariously and paradoxically balanced.
