Uncanny Doubles explores the unsettling space between familiarity and strangeness. The term ‘uncanny double’ refers to the duplication or mirroring of a body or identity that provokes a subtle unease. This effect may arise through repetition, through anthropomorphic objects that almost resemble the human form, or through the return to repressed materials and gestures in an altered guise.
Each figure is assembled from discarded textiles, materials and objects that were once valued and cared for, reconfigured through renewed attention and care. These figures are at once blank and expressive, familiar and strange, reflecting our own readings of ourselves and others. Their scale and postures invite projection, allowing each viewer to find different emotional or psychological resonances. When gathered in groups, new relations appear, relative to the figures surrounding them.
Olivia Hamilton has studied art and design, completing her PhD in Architecture and Urban Design at RMIT in 2018.
