Forests are the filtration and purification systems of all water, air and life on Earth. I am compelled to paint these environments, to shine a light on their importance plus the effects of human intervention and environmental vandalism - documenting the forest’s, and therefore our own, demise.

Conversely, they provide me with an awe-inspiring subject for my own artistic growth and practice. My art practice involves the absorption, digestion and reinterpretation of the landscapes around me - be it from a car window, or a walk in the bush.

Artist Bio

Artist, Julie McKenzie, moved to the centre of the Wombat State Forest in Victoria’s Central Highlands from the subtropical Northern Rivers of NSW in 2022. ‘Moods of the Forest’ is a series of landscapes and sculptures, drawing inspiration from the beauty of this new environment, while giving a nostalgic nod to the North.

Julie is an avid and passionate gardener - which has informed her personal life philosophy: ‘gardening will save the world’ and heavily influences her art practice.

Environmental issues like mono-cropping, climate change, and the clearing of swamps, forests and prime agricultural land to make way for ill-considered housing developments are some of the themes in her work.
