Manifesting from biological patterns and natural asymmetrical lineation, Tannia Taranto’s EVOLUTION series is an abstract reaction to the organic environment. From the spinal structure of sea urchins to the cavities created by geode rocks, to the timing of tree ring configurations and root systems, these sculpted relief works unify segments of the land and sea. After a process of experimentation, Tannia was led to the utilisation of plaster as the series’ medium, as both a homage to her father’s trade profession and reflection of her attraction to architectural and interior design.

Through the merging of monochromatic colour palettes, texturised linework and a labyrinth of intricate motifs, the series renders tones of immersion and intrigue, and generates a stimulating sensory appeal. While integrating artistic complexity, each work utilises a polarising minimalistic approach.

About the artist

Multidisciplinary Melbourne artist Tannia Taranto began her creative career as a Graphic Artist and Producer in television commercial production, working intermediately on animation and live action shoots. Having formerly studied visual arts at her secondary college, she reacquainted herself with the discipline by exhibiting early works in local charity fundraiser events in 2012. Deciding to immerse herself entirely in the venture, she resigned from her corporate work life in 2021 to focus her efforts to her establishing home studio.

Initially producing a series of portrait and figurative pieces, with the utilisation of monochromatic colour palettes and evocative female forms, these works explore complex human diversities and emotional constructs. At the same time, she began experimenting with an array of alternative mediums, that eventually included resin, ink and plaster, the later a homage to her father’s trade profession. Assembling an avenue of abstract relief renderings, these works, while initially influenced by architectural and interior design, have gone on to examine organic elements in the form of sculpted, heavily texturised contemporary pieces.

Specialising in several mediums and disciplines, Tannia Taranto has sold her works across Australia and around the world, participated in a diverse selection of group exhibitions across metropolitan Melbourne and creative collaborations with CATA (Creative Art Therapy Australia). She is an active member of Melbourne & Victorian Artists Inc. and previously a member with Diamond Valley based artist network TAM (Thou Art Mum).
