Sarah Firth

Attraction

9 November – 26 November 2011

Part painting, part sculpture, part installation Attraction is a sensual and dreamy exhibition, exploring and celebrating objects and ideas that entice the senses.

Sarah is well known for her quirky, witty and playful style that infuses all her creations ranging from painting to alternative comic art, animation, and kinetic sculpture. Now based in Melbourne, she graduated with Honours from the Sculpture Workshop at the ANU School of Art. Firth’s kinetic sculpture first gained major attention in 2005 with her work being selected for 25/25: Australia’s top 25 artists aged 25 and under. Her sculpture, comic and film work has been bought by Australian and International Collectors, won film festivals and received enthusiastic reviews. She also received the Nigel Thompson Traveling Scholarship to be an Australian representative for the first Asian Art Camp, an International Collaborative Symposium in Singapore.

Last year she was a finalist in the NY Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery and she was commissioned to make a large kinetic sculpture for Experimenta Media Arts. This year she has been working on a feature animated documentary and exhibition of comic work through her artist in residency with the Greater City of Dandenong Council supported by Arts About Us, and Vic Health. Sarah spent a year running comic drawing workshops with young children in Springvale who are recent migrants and refugees, empowering them to share their stories of everyday life. The animated documentary and final comics can be seen athttp://www.springvalestories.org.au/ and the exhibition runs till December.
