Figure 8 is a collaborative work realised by sisters Emma and Roberta Beilharz, through conversations they exchanged on how they felt they have been desired and perceived in intimate and detached spaces. The title, ‘Figure 8’, as it is written, refers to the idealisation of a woman’s body made from the male gaze. It uses the notion ‘Figure 8’ as a centre point of the work, referring and repeating. The eroticisation of Figure 8 is explored in both literal and abstract ways through the sound and visual aspects of the physical work.
About the Artists
Emma Beilharz is a creator who produces ambient and texture based sound composition. Emma specialises in FM (Frequency Modulation) and Granular forms of synthesis, and is influenced by the architecture of sound formation. Emma uses her compositions to express life through frequency, using text as a directive in her art to focus on significant experiences.
Roberta Beilharz uses sculpture, video art, and sound to create her experiential environments, focusing on installation to convey the experience for the viewer as part of the mechanism in bringing meaning across. She is deeply influenced by her own life-experiences and memories. Her work is often made as a response to something she has experienced, or something someone has said, or an issue that affects her directly. In this way she makes sense of her own reality, bringing her thoughts and experiences into a physical state.
