Opening Night

Friday 14 July | 6 - 8pm

◼︎

Nell Mckellar creates impossibly detailed paintings in watercolour and ink pen infused with nostalgia and dreamscapes that reflect her own personal journey. Her paintings are in defiance of mass production and instant gratification- A celebration of slowing down and taking the time for introspection and the gentle unravelling of memories, trauma, and the human psyche for personal growth and enrichment.
Nell’s process of creating intricate detail in her work is a practice of mindfulness, exploring the thin veil between the physical and spiritual world, the conscious and the mysterious subconscious mind.

Artist Bio

Based in Naarm/Melbourne, Nell McKellar is a self-taught artist with work in collections across the world, including Shanghai Disney, with her paintings hanging in the Fantasia-themed rooms.

As a child, severe scoliosis meant Nell had to wear a back brace for 23 hours a day from the age of 2 until she was 16. It was during her teenage years that she discovered Frida Kahlo’s painted body braces and her self-portrait in her brace. Kahlo’s work inspired Nell to explore her own themes of sickness, loneliness, and trauma using symbolism and surrealism. Painting became an important form of inner therapeutic work, her own safe refuge and source of strength.
