Naomi Waller
Opening Night
Friday 2 December | 6pm – 8pm
◼︎
The trauma from domestic abuse, family abuse and the death of her husband was complex and left an indelible impact on the life and perspective of Melbourne based artist, Naomi Waller. This large installation was conceived early into Naomi’s journey back to herself, but it has taken a few years before she reached the point that she could finally bring it into being. Naomi sees it as a self-portrait of types, speaking to both the grief and overwhelming challenges she experienced, as well as her resilience and determination to forge a new path into the future.
Regardless of how hard you fought, how much you tried to hold on to, you would inevitably concede your loss. You were never going to win, not unless you became like them. Not unless you became someone who repulsed you so completely. While your grip might have been slipping and the thread might have been fraying, you managed to hold on to a fibre of yourself. You were so close to letting go and being lost forever. Drowned in the overwhelming sense of loss, disorientation, confusion, grief, betrayal, anger, and hatred that had consumed your entire being. But instead, in the darkness you found compassion and empathy, and fed it. Compassion, not just for those who may not have deserved it, but also for yourself.
Grieve for all that you have lost, for all that could have been, for all the pain, for all the turmoil. And in time let something new grow in the broken part of yourself, the part that you keep safe, hidden, protected.
Artist Bio
Naomi Waller is a Melbourne-based artist who is forever fascinated with paper. Pushing her medium to its limits, she has created both large scale/life-sized installations entirely constructed from paper and miniature replications and musings. As someone who never grew out of daydreaming, Naomi’s work often views the world around her through a sense of whimsy.
