Mark Ryan
Opening Night
Friday 6 Oct | 6 - 8pm
◼︎
‘Possession’ continues Mark Ryan’s investigations of power, property and impermanent ownership: ’What was yours, is now mine’ and vice versa. Furthermore, what was once no one’s can become anyone’s. And all rights can be obliterated by new laws, aggression, obsolesce or the passage of time.
These abstract landscapes have a vertical perspective to reveal a palimpsest of uses, functions and ownership of their locations. They have been informed by geographical maps, both modern and ancient and rendered in the materials from the locations or found architectural components.
John Locke (29 August 1632 – 28 October 1704) was an English philosopher and physician, widely regarded as one of the most influential Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the "father of liberalism" argued ‘people were only entitled to ownership of the land if they made proper use of it.’
In 2023, Locke’s justifications for the occupation of land continue to play out across the landscape.
