Artist Bio
Jo Williams is a conceptual mixed-media artist. She works in series inspired by an idea, song lyrics, proverbs, travels, and the space between the dot points that hold all the stories.
Her work is spiritual, primal, organic, and based on her belief in the redemption of materials and people. She is interested in the bones, the scars, the wounds, and the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi, where pouring gold into the cracks of broken objects not only mends them but makes them stronger and more beautiful than before. She also studies the Japanese concept of Ma, the space between, the space that holds all the mystery, the anticipation, the magic, and the story.
Jo is also an arts educator who facilitates workshops throughout Central Queensland.
Jo was born in Cairns and grew up in the uranium mining town of Mary Kathleen before moving to Gladstone in 1963. She was a Mervyn Moriarty’s Australian Flying Arts School student from the late seventies. She graduated with a Diploma of Art (Fine Art) from National Art School in Sydney in 1990.
She has won an Australia Day Cultural Award and was the recipient of a Centenary Medal for her contribution to the Arts and Community in 2003.
She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions, won many awards, and is represented in collections throughout Australia and overseas.
Jo moved to Howard on the Fraser Coast in 2011, where she continues her art practise and teaching in her studio - Jo’s Art Cave.
