I am the family face;
Flesh perishes, I live on,
Projecting trait and trace
Through time to times anon,
And leaping from place to place
Over oblivion.The years-heired feature that can
In curve and voice and eye
Despise the human span
Of durance--that is I;
The eternal thing in man,
That heeds no call to die.- Thomas Hardy
Comprising a mix of figurative drawings and oil paintings, this exhibition observes the ways in which elements of the human face, figure and essence survive through generations, outliving the actual persons depicted.
Jayne’s preoccupation with capturing moments of curiosity, joy and introspection in her ever-evolving young daughter can be seen in these works, as well as the often confronting and challenging exploration of her own spiritual and physical identity through the practice of self-portraiture.
Kerrie’s work extends beyond depictions of her own and close family images, into an intimate exploration of the lives and faces of those around her. Through the interplay of light and dark, she strives to capture not just a likeness, but also the emotions, thoughts and sense of identity that lie beneath the surface.
