Portraits Between Alice Springs and Darwin

04 September – 22 September

Opening Night

Wednesday 4th September 2019, 6-8pm

The image of the cowboy is emblematic of the stoic Australian ideal. In a period of fluctuating national identity, it is held by many as a nostalgic symbol of national character and by some, an antiquated symbol of a conservative past.

Portraits between Alice Springs and Darwin presents a collection of these figures drawn from childhood memories of farmers and stockmen while Grant travelled this region. Executed on several large scale canvases the characters depicted here explore ideas of masculinity, isolation, fragility and the development of identity
