Helen Edwards
Opening Night
Friday 19 July | 6 - 8pm
◼︎
These days when she enters her studio Helen she is free of expectations and with an open mind. She does not plan or sketch but finds a starting point onto which she can continue to build as one idea leads to another. Keeping herself open to possibilities as she works Helen has discovered that each artwork continues to grow and have a life of its own. And each completed work leads effortlessly on to the next. Helen always works on several pieces at once.
She finds that she does indeed ‘build’ her artworks adding and assembling both disparate and related images and objects which ultimately come together in a way that is meaningful to her.
Helen hopes that her artworks will prompt viewers to find and wonder at something of their own life’s experience believing that the most successful artworks are those about which many different stories can be told.
Helen’s artist’s journey has been a voyage of discovery for her. She has learned to resist rules and fashions and respond to her own instincts and inclinations. She knows and accepts that she loves to draw and that this will always underpin her work, that she sometimes loves colour and sometimes monochrome, that she loves a tonal approach, that she hates straight lines, that she is a messy worker, that she loves painting faces and figures, that she needs variety in her subject matter, that she is always nervous starting a new work …..and most of all that she needs to keep making art!
Artist Bio
Helen was born and grew up in Melbourne. She has worked as a professional artist since leaving teaching in 1992
Initially painting in soft pastel Helen gained recognition for her landscapes and figurative works with many art awards and sales. Her lifelong interest in drawing has always informed her Art and she has exhibited widely in group shows and held regular successful solo exhibitions.
For a number of years Helen taught and conducted workshops in Pastel Painting. During this time she was a respected judge of Art Shows and competitions.
Portrait painting was Helen’s focus for many years with selection for many National Portrait Competitions and which culminated in her portrait of ‘The Seekers’ being acquired by The National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.
Helen is committed to continuing growth as an artist and several years ago enjoyed a two year period of mentoring with a respected artist. She was encouraged to experiment and play with a variety of media and ideas and ‘go with the flow”. This approach leads to her recent experimentation with sculpture and 3D.
The following year she further expanded her horizons attending a print-making workshop in Florence Italy.
