Urban Environs of the Inner North is a series of multimedia paintings intended to explore the niche of city life in the inner north whilst capturing its charismatic light and aura. Fitzroy was initially built on the rush of wealth from the gold fields, with large lots of land being claimed and divided in the mid 1800's. As the gold rush accelerated, the city of Melbourne also grew. These lots just north of the city were eventually subdivided with new dwellings and thoroughfares arising, allowing for the settlement of the working class in the inner north. As the century turned, the settlement of migrants in the area was largely responsible for giving Fitzroy the colourful social aesthetic it has been known for for decades. Many original dwellings still stand in Carlton and Fitzroy making these suburbs some of the most colonially historical places in the country. Despite the beauty, it must be acknowledged that all of these gorgeous buildings were erected on stolen land. Artist Bio Emmanuel Boahene is a self-taught, multidisciplinary artist currently practising visual art through painting and sewing. He creates abstract textile compositions with his fashion label “Boujani” and transcribes his artistic visions and vehemences through oil, spray, acrylic, and pastels.
