Somewhere near home.

This body of work is a reflection on Dieter’s daily commutes around the streets of Melbourne through an abstract lens. The sight of rooftops, alleyways, graffiti, maps, and roads under construction and decay, continue to bombard his senses. Seemingly there is no clear path and ever increasing congestion. A fleeting glimpse of the surrounding hills offers little to allay his building anxiety.

Identifying what home means to Dieter has been central to his art practice for many years. With each drawing he is focusing on how the sanctuary of home life is increasingly surrounded by forces that seem to be changing the meaning of home for him. Compartments of time and fracturing of flow feels like the town Dieter calls home is becoming unrecognisable.

With his art practice inspired by his Ukrainian heritage, he also feels fortunate to have a place to call home.
