Life-lines

G1

Opening Night

Friday 30 September | 6pm – 8pm

Ashley’s work is currently hand drawn exclusively in blue ink - biro to be precise. Each piece is a product of a process both spontaneous and deliberate: a layering of line upon line, every segment worked and reworked, before being digitally enlarged onto canvas.  This process amplifies the inks imperfections and character in a way that wouldn’t be realised by applying biro ink directly on to canvas. Originality is maintained as only one unique artwork is ever created from each drawing.

“…I’m compelled by the permanent,

                          unforgiving nature of blue ink.”

With it comes a lesson in acceptance which is synonymous of life - imperfections serve best when acknowledged and embraced rather than viewed as an indelible stain of shame or regret.

Life-Lines explores themes of childhood, personal growth and human interaction. Ashley’s arduous yet delicately woven lines build non-intrusive 2D blue-on-white scapes which are largely unhindered by focal, representational subject matter. With such a dramatically reduced colour palette, Ashley bares both his confidence and vulnerability as he relies entirely on line, space and movement to articulate his emotions and concepts
