Aphroditi Karalis
Opening Night
Friday 13 September | 6 - 8pm

Time, memory and the ephemeral are themes that run through my work. I use a variety of mediums, sometimes together sometimes on their own, to create a feeling I would like to express but don’t quite know the words to use.
Macauley Culkin, an American actor said something that jumps right out at me. “I am a collection of thoughts and memories and likes and dislikes. I am the things that have happened to me and the sum of everything I’ve ever done. I am the clothes I wear on my back. I am every place and every person and every object I have ever come across.”
It’s ‘the things that have happened’, the untimely and horrific death of my brother, watching loved ones be ravaged by cancer, stuck in a soul destroying job and not knowing how to leave -all this and more that being alive throws at you that sits under the skin.
In this body of work i use mainly acrylics and create history by adding layers. In the first few I use my hands to feel the canvas and move pigment. As I progress through the layers I move to a pancake spatula or palette knife to push away the paint or pull it towards me or sometimes slashing through it leaving behind scarring or stitching. I work on the kitchen floor like my canvas is a body on a battlefield being tended by a doctor.
“You remember too much, my mother said to me recently. Why hold onto all that? And I said, where can I put it down?” - Anne Carson, Canadian Poet
