Peridot

5 - 23 May

Opening Night

Wednesday 5 May, 6pm – 8pm

◼︎

This body of work was produced during the long Melbourne COVID lockdown of 2020.  These paintings are the results of a productive phase in a time of great uncertainty – they come from a creative burst that counterbalanced the threat of destruction by virus.  In 2020, nature reminded us very pointedly, of her power and magnitude, one minute by fire, the next by disease.

Many of the paintings make reference to minerals, in particular gemstones such as opal and olivine. I have called the exhibition Peridot (pair-ee-doh), which a form of Olivine gemstone.  While Olivine is common, Peridot is special because it has two sources: from the Earth’s mantle, brought to the surface by the tremendous forces of earthquakes and volcanoes, but it also comes to Earth carried by meteorites called pallasites.

Peridot is a crystal that is not only rich in cultural history, but also in mysticism and healing power.  The qualities ascribed to Peridot are apt for our times; it has protective qualities, enhances bravery and confidence, and encourages us to speak with kindness.
