Anne Hastie

Altered States

30 May – 16 June 2012

This exhibition is about change.  It explores the transformative processes so integral to the experience of making a painting, and in viewing a painting.  The works in this show also refer to the irrevocable alterations that come with the progress of time; changes in self perception, and in the world around us.

Anne Hastie has travelled China, mainly Beijing, on a regular basis for over a decade. In 2009 and 2010 she visited Daxing, a semi-rural village on the outskirts of the city of Beijing, to celebrate Chinese New Year.  Daxing is a farming community famous for growing watermelons, and like most of china is being developed and transformed at an astonishing rate.  Among Anne’s many photos, one image of her own shadow cast across some disused plastic that was used to cover the melons has become one of the centre pieces of this exhibition as it captures the poignancy of times past and the power of transformation.
