Alison Aplin

Diversity: Imaginations Of An Artist

14 - 25 June 2023

G4

Opening Night

Friday 16 June | 6 - 8pm

◼︎

This is a body of work that exists without a visual theme. Aplin’s work is diverse; each work varies in both its technique and use of colour. Colour and depth are constants with each piece, but there is no intended repetition of palette throughout the range.

As a mixed media artist, Aplin use a range of products including synthetic polymer paint and spray, acrylic ink, pencil, soft pastel, oil, oil pastel, oil sticks and charcoal. Transparent washes are used in many works where oils aren’t used, to help increase the depth of each painting. Collage and enhanced texturing also feature in some works, instigating a conversation within the flattened plane – an interaction intended to create depth and impact in the work.

Aplin is not committed to the need for negative space, being more interested in the balance of each work, the movement of the eye throughout the painting, tonal variations, contrast, and depth.

Aplin is self-taught. But she sees this as no impediment. Her commitment to her art practice is absolute, maintaining a regular timeslot for painting with virtually every day. She has learnt her craft by constant practice, her interest in different mediums and techniques, and a bold and vivid imagination. This has been around 12 years and is now reaping good rewards, hopefully leading to a professional art practice. Her work is being readily accepted with exhibitions, although it has been a difficult journey being an artist from a very conservative, realist driven, regional area near Portland. There is no outlet for exposure of her work locally forcing her to find galleries outside of her area willing to exhibit her work. These events are now happening more regularly.

Reflecting on her broader art practice, this series has been driven by process and is strongly influenced by the abstract expressionist style, principles of design from her long career as a multi award winning sustainable landscape designer, her love of nature, and desire for environmental well-being.
