A Dark Abstract Inner Voyage
My artistic practice is an ongoing exploration of the inner universe and its connection to the cosmos. A central theme in my current work is the concept of dark matter, the unseen yet omnipresent force that shapes the universe. I am particularly intrigued by the idea that this invisible energy may parallel aspects of the human condition—our emotions, subconscious thoughts, and the intangible forces that influence our lives. This fascination drives my creative process, which begins with conceptual inquiry and visual research, followed by an intuitive yet deliberate translation of these ideas into material form.
Another key theme in my work is the human-made landscape as a construct—how urban development, architecture, and industrial expansion alter our perception of the natural world. I investigate how these constructed environments shape our experience of reality, mediate our relationship with nature, and impact daily life. This inquiry informs the formal and compositional decisions in my work, where abstraction and representation converge to evoke a sense of tension between the organic and the artificial.
I have used charcoal on paper for several decades, originally as a medium to plan black and white photography. Black and white photography is an influence, particularly the deep blacks of Edward Weston and Robert Mapplethorpe. Beyond photography, I draw inspiration from the city and suburban streets of Melbourne, graffiti, urban decay, and construction provide me with visual stimuli, as does the unfiltered natural world.
If I were to encapsulate my work in a single phrase, it would be: “A dark abstract inner voyage.”

Dieter Kraus's (b. 1972) journey as an abstract artist began in the early 1990s at Prahran College (Melbourne, Australia), where he studied under renowned artists such as Aleks Danko in drawing, Graeme Hare in photography, Tony Clark in painting, and Howard Arkley, a pioneer in Australian art. These early influences instilled in him a commitment to exploring unique and diverse forms of visual expression.
Dieter works mainly with charcoal, pastel and pencil on paper. his art is held in private collections throughout Australia, North America, and the UK.His exhibitions continue to offer audiences an intimate look into his abstract world, driven by an ever-evolving exploration of form, texture, and the shifting interplay between humanity and nature.
