9 April – 26 April 2014: Manfred Krautschneider – Suburban Abstract

Captured through and on awnings and glass Krautscheider’s works successfully straddles the border between recognition and abstraction. His photographs transform street life and tourist precincts into transcendent images.

In Suburban Abstract the artist explores the subtle distortions of the streetscape reflected on imperfect surfaces. His current series includes multiple reflections from inner and outer surfaces creating extensive transformations that result in contemporary abstracts. ‘In the past, glass was always distorted, leading me to believe that many modernists may actually have been inspired by direct observation of such reflections.’

Past viewers have mistaken his work for photos of paintings. To counteract this, the artist now sometimes includes glimpses of himself within the work. From this he forms a point of reference, making his artistic process more transparent.
