25 February – 15 March 2014: Kate Walsh – Cultural Exchange: Business in China

Walsh’s painting practice pivots around an investigation of body language and facial expressions that reflect ┬áthe dynamics of personal interaction as well as emotional, psychological and spiritual states of being. Her latest series: Cultural Exchange: Business in China, functions as a visual diary that conveys the inevitable communication gaps, negotiations and connections that occur as a result of engaging with another language and culture.

With the deliberate use of ink, a favoured medium in Chinese art and writing, Walsh applies subtle translucent layers that are combined with a linear mark making onto raw canvas. Through portraiture, figurative and metaphoric imagery, this series references rituals and relationships, as well as everyday observations that depict the diversity and commonalities of our human condition; heightened by the immersion into a culture different from ones own.
