Mary Sutherland visually interprets the notion of the heart. Her water colour and wax works on paper investigate not only the romantic and poetic notions of the word but also the medieval and mystical.
Sutherland has set up an intriguing dialogue between the viewer and the image. The heart becomes a vessel, a soul, a memory, a hope and a passion. Deep within each piece are innumerable aesthetic decisions, swathes of ink, and coursing drips. Through Sutherland’s myriad of interpretations and expressions, emotion lingers beyond the paper surface.
