Screenshot! is an exploration of portraiture’s contemporary iterations within digital culture. Sarah Rhiannon’s vivid portraits draw on her own experiences of using the website Chatroulette and mobile application Snapchat.
Both Chatroulette and Snapchat promise an ephemeral form of play, yet provide the potential for documentation through screenshots. This tension between the temporary and permanent lies at the very heart of social media: it is a medium which moves quickly, yet constantly archives itself – effectively writing events into history as they occur. Rhiannon’s current body of work serves to establish a dialogue between the fast-paced nature of social media and the historically long-standing medium of painting.
Rhiannon is a Melbourne based artist. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (hons) from Monash University. This is her first solo show.
