27 February – 15 March 2008: Helen Martin – Helen’s Fault

Gallery 1

Helen Martin’s work is concerned with matters of national identity.  Asking what it means to live in contemporary Australia, Helen draws on the gap between lived experience and popular myth, her representation of Australian identity informed by her own experiences.

Born in England Helen has made her home in Australia and in her work makes a personal challenge to popular constructions of the Australian landscape.  Martin sets the spotlight on the conflicting forces that contribute to our national identity and examines institutionalized narratives presented by the media.  Within this set of parameters, Martin seeks not only to challenge popular constructions of Australian landscape, but also to reflect in very personal terms upon the fault lines that separate her birthplace, England, from her adopted home, Australia.

Helen Martin recently completed a Masters in Visual Arts at the University of Melbourne.
